In this series of lectures, we will begin by considering the origin of the gospel tradition, the relationship between history and sacred text, and the ancient literary genre called gospel. Then, as time allows, we will discuss each of the three books with respect to their unique theologies, the pastors who authored them, and their place in the life of the Church today. In all of our discussions we will carefully follow the Church’s teaching by using proper literary and historical methods. First, we will consider the keys to understanding Paul’s sometimes complicated writings. Then, using these keys, we will together discern the qualities of Christian life that shaped the Apostle's own life in Christ—and eventually defined his martyrdom. We will soon realize that, as the first to formulate the gospel message, St. Paul's message is strikingly powerful and refreshing for our life today.
