Position: Lay Pastoral Worker
Location:
 St John's Anglican Church, Walmer, Gqeberha (Port Eizabeth) 
Remuneration: Competitive salary, based on experience

St John's Anglican Church is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Lay Pastoral Worker to join our team. This is a vital role, supporting the pastoral care and spiritual life of the congregation through a variety of key duties. The successful candidate will be an active, practising Christian with a heart for service and a passion for supporting others in their faith journey.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Pastoral Care
    • Visit and support members in hospital and residential care settings.
    • Co-ordinate home communion for those unable to attend church services.
    • Provide resources for crisis counselling and offer support to individuals in need.
    • Actively visit new parishioners to welcome them into the church community, providing information, support, and guidance as they settle in.
  • Bible Study & Group Co-ordination
    • Lead, facilitate, and coordinate Bible study groups and discussion forums to nurture spiritual growth within the congregation.
  • Programme & Course Co-ordination
    • Assist in the organisation, promotion, and development of various church programmes, courses, and events designed to deepen faith and engage the wider community.
  • Assistance with Special Services & Liturgy Development
    • Work alongside the clergy to assist in planning and facilitating special church services, including seasonal events, sacraments, and liturgy development.
  • Fellowship Functions
    • Support the planning and execution of fellowship events to build community and strengthen relationships among church members.

Key Requirements:
  • A practising Christian with a personal faith and commitment, who will worship at St John's Anglican Church.
  • Able to integrate into the mainline Christian ethos within the Anglican tradition.
  • High level of proficiency in English (written and spoken)
  • Own transport and a valid driver's license, with the ability to travel to visit members as needed.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office and church management software.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and support people from all walks of life.
  • Organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks and events.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in a pastoral or community-based role is desirable.
  • Ability to work sensitively and discreetly with individuals in emotional, physical or spiritual distress.
  • A heart for service and a genuine desire to support and encourage others in their faith journey.
  • Flexibility and a willingness to assist with ad hoc duties as required.

Desirable Skills and Attributes:
  • Training or qualifications in pastoral care, counselling, or Christian ministry.
  • Experience with event planning and administration.
