National Day of Prayer for South Africa - 20 March 2009

Focus: National Elections

This is a call from NIRSA, TEASA, Jericho Walls, Global Day of Prayer and other Christian organisations for the Church to pray and seek God's face for our nation in this season of change and turmoil.

We call on the Church to set aside one day of CORPORATE PRAYER (Friday 20 March 2009) and three days of FASTING and PRAYER (18 - 20 March 2009).

Strategy

20 March 2009: 1 day of corporate prayer

• For each community, town, congregation, school or business to organise a dedicated time of corporate worship on the National Day of Prayer (e.g. in the Town Hall, Public Square, School Hall, high places overlooking the community, in a Mall or in church buildings).

• For every church of all denominations to organise a time of corporate prayer for their congregation on this day (e.g. early morning, lunchtime and evening prayer meeting, cell groups, meeting for men, women, youth and children etc)

• For businesses, municipalities, public offices, schools, universities and sport centres etc. to make available a small office or private space and to encourage employees, clients and visitors to join in prayer for our nation.

18 – 20 March 2009: 3 days fasting and prayer

• For every church of all denominations to organise times of corporate prayer for their congregation (e.g. early morning, lunchtime and evening prayer meetings, meetings for men, women, youth and children) for the duration of the three days of prayer and fasting.

• For every individual Christian to rise up, take their stand before the Throne of Grace and intercede for our nation for at least one hour during the three days of fasting.

• Consider filling the three days with multiple night-and-day prayer sessions.

• We encourage individuals to participate in the three days of fasting on any one of the following ways of fasting:

  • Normal Fast (no food, just water/liquids)
  • Esther Fast (no food and no water - get advice from medical practitioner)
  • Daniel Fast (simple food/vegetables/fruit, liquids)
  • Partial Fast (eat only one meal per day)
  • Soul Fasting (consider refraining from any kind of entertainment e.g. TV or movies - for the three days)

Prayer Guidelines

The following guidelines are to help you to focus your prayers on two aspects of prayer:

Proclamations and Thanksgivings

I confess and believe that:

• The Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit is sovereign, rules from heaven and is in control over South Africa! Psa 47:8, Jer 10:7.
• God sees and responds to everything that happens in South Africa! Psalm 33:13-15, Genesis 16:13.
• God has a plan and a purpose for South Africa! Isaiah 14:26.
• God answers the prayers of those who cry out to Him. Isaiah 41:17, Isaiah 58:9-10, Matthew 7:7.
• God will bring salvation to the unsaved in South Africa! Psalm 42:11, Psalm 79:9.
• God wants the wicked and the violent to repent and turn to Him! Ezekiel 18:23.
• Justice will come to South Africa! Luke 18:7.
• God's mercy will triumph over judgment for the healing and restoration of our nation! James 2:13, 2 Chronicles 7:14.

Prayer points for the 2009 elections

For peaceful, free, air and just elections.

• Pray that we will be a nation built on Truth. Isaiah 26:2.
• Pray that every church leader and every member of the Body of Christ will set a Godly standard of righteousness within their own lives. That our behaviour will reflect ‘Christ’ in all things at all times. That we will become citizens of SA responsible for our actions before God. Hebrews 12.14
• Pray for every Christian who is in politics. That they will provide Godly leadership by example. Romans 8:28 2 Timothy 2:15
• Pray for the current political leaders. That their conduct during the electoral process will be determined by a greater revelation of the fact that they are called upon to govern as servants to the nation before God. Romans 13.11 Timothy 2:1-2
• Pray for the various political parties to respect and honour the right of each party to campaign without intimidation or fear of retaliation.
• Pray that God will deliver us from ‘tribal’-minded leaders.
• Pray that God will help us to overcome the cycle of violence in our nation.
• Pray for future political leaders to be appointed because they are men and women of Godly character.
• That the incoming government will promote laws that honour God. Hosea 10:12.
• That the intervention in the plight of the poor and needy in our nation will be foremost on the agenda of our government. Psalm 72:4, Psalm 72:12.
• Pray that God will deliver our nation from evil. Psalm 2:8
• That His Kingdom be established in this nation as it is in heaven. Colossians 1:15 -20
• That righteousness and justice will prevail and because of that there will be peace. 2 Chronicles 7: 14. John 14:14, John 16.23

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on South Africa. Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on South Africa. Holy Spirit, have mercy on South Africa.

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit we bless you South Africa!
