A New Season for Global Day of Prayer

Source: Transformation Africa (SA)
Date Added: 2010-07-15

GDOP 2010 was a wonderful celebration year of 10 years of repentance and prayer across the globe! The conference in Cape Town and the GDOP event on 23 May was a testimony to the fact that this is a move of God, uniting the Body of Christ in prayer.

There was great celebration throughout South Africa on the GDOP as in excess of 600 cities, towns, villages and townships were actively involved. The feedback and photos received from various events has been very encouraging, as it is evident the passion for prayer in our nation is growing. It was very significant that GDOP took place just 3 weeks before the commencement of the soccer world cup, and having just experienced the most successful soccer world cup ever, we can only give God all the glory for the powerful answers to prayer.

As we look back we thank God for 10 years of huge impact across the globe, but as we look forward we also recognize that we are now entering a new season with respect to the GDOP.

It was significant to be gathered in great meetings, in some places with hundreds of thousands. It was even more important that God had helped us to pray great prayers. The GDOP has changed the way we think of praying together. It has become a common practice for Christians all over the world to gather in order to seek God for His Kingdom and Christ’s transforming life throughout the earth.

GDOP began as a simple call to gather as His people for a day of repentance and prayer based on 2 Chron. 7:14. As millions of Christians responded to that call over the last 10 years, it was understandable that many were focused on mobilizing huge numbers of people who gathered in large stadiums and public places. This created the perception that GDOP was all about numbers and targets, but as the movement matured year after year, it became clear that the most significant outcome was that Christians of diverse traditions were learning to pray together in various settings in sustained ways for God’s purposes to be fulfilled. The experience of uniting for ten days of continual prayer has given birth to countless prayer vigils, many of these continuing 24 hours a day. Praying globally while gathering locally has changed the way that millions of Christians pray.

A new season has dawned for GDOP! The growing momentum of the last 10 years has now laid the foundation to saturate nations in prayer. It’s time to shift our focus from 220 nations to facilitate a lifestyle of prayer with as many people in as many places as possible. In this new season, we will no longer aim at the goal of having organized events in every single country of the world, but rather to increase the number of gatherings on Pentecost Sunday in smaller settings, such as local churches, family homes and businesses instead of stadiums and assembly halls.

We are confident that there will continue to be organized GDOP events in most countries on Pentecost Sunday. There will certainly be Christians praying in every continent and almost every time zone across the face of the earth. From year to year there may be more millions of Christians participating, or there may less. The focus will not be on the number of nations participating, but rather the substance of continuing to unite in prayer for Christ’s glory and the blessing of the nations.

Therefore we will continue to call for a Global Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday for the foreseeable future, but we are calling on more people in more places, making the vision of GDOP more accessible to all people.

In the season ahead, we expect that in most settings, local leaders will continue to use the 10-1-90 strategy: Ten days of continual prayer leading to one day of united prayer, followed by ninety days of practically making ourselves available to God to become the answers to some of our prayers in community service.

As before, we will ask local leaders to include one feature in every GDOP program on Pentecost Sunday: a reading aloud of the powerful “Prayer for the World.” Because there will be observances in most countries, local leaders will be able to strengthen local prayer movements by assuring Christians that they are praying in tangible, vital unity with believers from all over the world. This will still be a key and powerful moment annually when the global body unites in prayer!

As we prayed and asked for God guidance on the way forward we have also felt that God wants GDOP to serve the wider prayer movement in more practical ways. Therefore we will send out bi-weekly e-mails from September to just before 10 Days to inform, equip and serve the body of Christ with the practical ideas and tools of other global prayer ministries. It is our hope that this will help us to establish a lifestyle of prayer across the globe and further assist us in mobilizing as many people in as many places as possible to pray in unity for the healing of the nations and the blessing of our Lord Jesus.

As we make a transition to a different season of GDOP, we want to honor and thank those who have served local prayer movements with such perseverance, zeal and dedication. It’s an honor to be co-working with so many thousands of passionate prayer mobilizers. Yes, it is the end of a season, but it’s the beginning of a new and exciting one and it is our honor to be on this journey with you!

We challenge you to look forward with us in confidence and courage. God has given you grace and vision to serve prayer movements in many diverse ways. God has already brought forth great fruit from the seeds of all of our efforts. In the future, God will not fail to bring forth even greater fruit.

Please join us in praying for other GDOP servants in other nations. Let’s all be seeking Him for strength and wisdom to co-work with Christ to see an increase in united prayer in these amazing days.

We look forward to continue the journey. Our office will always be there to serve you and we will provide all the necessary resources and support to assist you in mobilizing as many people in as many places. Do not hesitate to contact us.

May we see the fulfillment of Hab. 2:14: “For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”

Many Blessings
The GDOP Team

New strategy for a new season

In our journey to utilize GDOP in the next few years to mobilize as many people in as many places as possible to continually pray for the healing of the nations and the blessing of Christ, we have adopted our strategy. They center focus will still be on the 10-1-90 strategy, but to establish a lifestyle of continuous prayer we have made a few additions. The strategy will now be as follows:

  1.  From October to May a once a month feature with a specific focus on how to mobilize prayer in smaller settings, like family homes, churches, businesses, etc. This will consist of a 1-page e-mail with information, teaching and practical tools and links. Areas that will be focused on will be 24/7 Prayer, Prayer Evangelism, Praying for the 7 Mountains, How to pray for the nations, Praying for the Unreached, praying for the Persecuted Church and Praying for the 10/40 Window.

  2.  From October to May a once a month newsletter with prayer news, information and prayer challenges from the nations. This will assist you to unite in prayer continually for the needs of this world.

  3.  10 Days of day and night prayer in the 10 days leading up to GDOP. Once again we will provide a 10 Day Prayer Guide for adults, youth and children. This tool will be focused on gathering smaller groups in as many places as possible in the nations to pray and to remind God of His promises of healing and restoration.

  4.  1 Day of united prayer. From now on the challenge will not be to reach 220 nations. The focus will also not be on big events. This will be a grass roots challenge to unite people from as many nations as possible in as many settings as possible, no matter how small these gathering are. The key focus will be to pray the Prayer for the World with believers from all over the world.

  5.  90 Days of Blessing following GDOP. Prayer is about intimacy and action, about connecting to the Father’s heart and then becoming the vessels through which He can pour his love, grace and mercy onto broken people and desperate situations. We will continue to provide a Prayer Guide with practical ideas for acts of compassion during this period of time.

To support this 5-fold strategy the GDOP office will continue to provide all the necessary resources like video clips, powerpoint presentations, prayer guides, etc. to assist you in mobilizing your sphere of influence. We are considering to once again provide a resource cd/dvd.

This strategy will lead us into a new season of saturating nations with prayer. There will be no pressure to organize huge events with big numbers of people. Anyone anywhere on the face of the earth can now participate and still feel part of God’s bigger family uniting in prayer. Let us still be encouraged as we seek His face together.
