The Nelson Mandela Bay Civil Society Coalition calls on political leadership in the metro to stop wasting time and resources on constantly forming and realigning coalitions which have a track record of being unstable.
Although the proposed Section 12 amendment which will see the metro move away from an executive mayor system may achieve the similarity result, we advocate a negotiated alternative.
Through constant jockeying for power, the needs of the people of the metro – their constituents – are being ignored.
We call on the ANC and DA to form a government of local unity, which is the will of the people.
Each has 48 seats, which gives them a total of 96 seats out of 120, or a majority of 80%.
The voters have overwhelmingly put their trust in the two parties to lead the metro.
Forming a government of local unity would be another metro first.
Nelson Mandela Bay is a unique metro and requires its own form of political governance.
While the DA and the ANC have the clear majority, we believe that they should include individuals from the smaller parties who have demonstrated competence and have credulity with the voters and municipal officials.
If the political leadership does not take this bold step in the interests of the people of the metro, then the instability caused by the leadership vacuum will continue as one coalition after the other collapses.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Civil Society Coalition has been in talks with most of the political parties, and is willing and able to facilitate working with them to facilitate the transition to what we believe will be a ground-breaking solution to the instability which plagues the majority of municipalities in the country.
